The collection consists of newspaper clippings, correspondence, speeches, a poster, and testimonials relating to Frank C. Manak, Sr. Includes material relating to his son, Frank C. The collection consists of correspondence, speeches, legal papers and documents, reports and memoranda on civic, municipal, and national affairs, scrapbooks of clippings, pamphlets, and other material on social and international questions, the Republican Party in Cleveland and Ohio, Morgan's interest in civic organizations, his term in the Ohio State Senate, the city managership of Cleveland, political campaigns for himself and Harold H. Burton, his law practice and activities in wartime agencies, and his service on the Ohio Court of Appeals.

	Abstract:	Theodore E. Burton (1851-1929) was a United States Representative (1889-1891, 1895-1909, and 1921-1928) and Senator (1909-1915 and 1928-1929) from Cleveland, Ohio. While in Congress, Burton was involved in a number of important issues of the day, and was also a prominent figure in Republican Party politics. He maintained a lifelong involvement in the international peace movement. Burton was a candidate in the 1907 Cleveland mayoral election, losing to Democrat Tom L. Johnson. A bachelor, he was close to his niece, Grace Burton, who became a political confidant, housekeeper, and companion to him in his later years. The collection consists of diaries, journals, appointment books, correspondence, reports, bills and government documents, minutes, notes and other memoranda, pamphlets, printed public remarks, speeches, articles, manuscripts, notebooks, account books, receipts, income tax returns, programs and other memorabilia, passports, address files, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks. Legislative issues Burton was involved with are well represented in the collection. These include inland waterways; the Inland Waterways Commission; financial, banking, and currency legislation; immigration restriction; postal, trade and tariff issues; the Panama Canal; political patronage; veterans' and pension affairs; and labor legislation. Local Cleveland, Ohio, issues are represented in the collection. These include the 1907 Cleveland mayoral race, construction of a federal building, local and Ohio politics, and the flood of 1913. Burton's dedication to the international peace movement is documented in the collection. The important role played by his niece Grace Burton is illustrated in her correspondence with her uncle, often demonstrating her own deep interest in local and national politics. Burton's own writings, especially research materials and manuscripts for his two major works, Financial Crises and John Sherman, make up a significant portion of the collection.

	Abstract:	Warner M. Bateman (1827-1897), noted Cincinnati, Ohio, lawyer, pursued a long and distinguished career not only in the field of law, but also in the world of nineteenth century Republican politics. Bateman served as an Ohio state senator 1865-1868, and as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio 1869-1877. He played a prominent role at the 1880 Republican National Convention, heading the campaign of John Sherman as Republican candidate for the Presidency of the United States. The collection consists of journals, notebooks, speeches, letters, bound volumes of correspondence, account books, dockets, checks, receipts, deeds, dividends, tax records, agreements, invitations, business cards and advertisements, notes, souvenirs, notebooks containing notes for Republican Party lectures, and eight volumes of newspaper clippings relating to legal and political matters. The bulk of the correspondence consists of letters relating to various legal, personal, political, and professional matters associated with Bateman's activities as lawyer, politician, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio (1869-1877), and manager (1880) of John Sherman's political interests. Notable correspondents include John Sherman, Salmon P. Chase, James A. Garfield, Marcus A. Hanna, Rutherford B. Hayes, William T. Sherman, and William H. Taft. A calendar of correspondence is included in Appendix I in the register to the collection.

	Abstract:	Peter Witt (1869-1948) was the Cleveland, Ohio traction commissioner (1912-1915) under Mayor Newton D. Baker and city councilman (1924-1927) who served as a transit consultant for several major United States cities. He was a close friend and ally of Cleveland mayor Tom L. Johnson. The collection consists of correspondence, speeches, articles, reports, campaign literature, interview notes made by Louis Plost, scrapbooks, and newspaper clippings, relating chiefly to Witt's political activities and especially to his association with Tom L. Johnson, mayor of Cleveland. Some of the papers relate to Witt's work as a transit consultant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Newark, New Jersey, in the 1920s. Correspondents include Eugene V. Debs, Elizabeth J. Hauser, Tom L. Johnson, P.J. Mitten, and Brand Whitlock.

	Abstract:	George Harrison Bender (1896-1961) was a United States Senator from Ohio (1954-1957). He also served as Ohio state senator (1921-1931), chairman of the Cuyahoga County Republican Central Committee (1938-1954), and U.S Representative (1939-1949, 1951-1954). The collection consists of correspondence, speeches, biographical accounts, newsletters, campaign and election literature, certificates, testimonials, souvenir programs, newspaper clippings, and articles by or about Bender. Includes material on prohibition, police pensions, and civil service laws, among other topics. The correspondence, primarily from constituents, also includes letters from both local and national political figures.

8	Title:	Political Experiences of Major General Jacob Dolson Cox

	Abstract:	Jacob Dolson Cox was a Union Army general and politician from Ohio. During the American Civil War, Cox headed the Department of the Kanawha, commanded the IX Corps of the Army of Virginia, and in 1863, assumed command of the District of Ohio and of the 3rd Division, XXIII Corps. After the war, he was Governor of Ohio (1866-1867) and was President Grant's Secretary of the Interior (1869-1870). He was also president of the Wabash Railroad and was elected to Congress in 1876. He authored Military Reminiscences of the Civil War (1900). The collection consists of a bound, ribbon copy of William Cox Cochran's(1846-1936) unfinished biography of his stepfather, Major General Jacob Dolson Cox (1828-1900). This unpublished manuscript was prepared after William Cox Cochran's death in 1936.

	Abstract:	John Patterson Green (1845-1940) was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer, justice of the peace (1873-1882), Ohio state congressman (1882-1892), state senator (1892-1896), and United States Postage Stamp Agent. He was a powerful Republican campaign orator and was influential in William McKinley's 1896 presidential campaign. He was the first African American to be elected to public office in Cleveland, Ohio. 	Abstract:	Rollin C. Hurd (1815-1874) was a lawyer and judge of the Court of Common Pleas in Mount Vernon, Ohio. His son, Frank H. Hurd (1840-1896) , was a lawyer, state legislator, and U.S. Representative, of Mount Vernon and Toledo, Ohio. The collection consists of correspondence, legal briefs, and other business papers relating to the activities of Rollin C. Hurd, including material relating to the case of Amasa Bunnell et al. vs. Henry Stoddard concerning the estate of Amos Stoddard (d. 1813) and business papers of Messrs. Warden and Burr, of Mount Vernon; also, letters to Frank H. Hurd, dealing primarily with state politics, chiefly 1866-1868.

	Abstract:	Myron T. Herrick (1854-1929) was a humanitarian, financier, industrialist, Governor of Ohio, and United States Ambassador to France. Herrick served as president and chairman of the board of the Society for Savings, Cleveland, Ohio. He also had numerous other local and national business interests. Herrick was involved in Ohio and national Republican party politics, maintaining close ties with Marcus A. Hanna, William McKinley, and other party notables. He won election as Ohio governor in 1903, serving one term. He was appointed United States Ambassador to France in 1912, serving until November 1914. Herrick played a key role in wartime France, both in his participation in diplomatic relations between combatants and in various humanitarian aid pursuits. Herrick was reappointed Ambassador to France by President Harding in 1921, serving until his death in 1929. The collection consists of correspondence, speeches, articles, memoirs, newspaper and magazine clippings, memoranda, notes, receipts, deeds, programs and other memorabilia, passports, reports, appointment books, bound visitors' and engagement books, luncheon and dinner records, diaries, photographs, and scrapbooks. Includes correspondence covering Herrick's terms as United States Ambassador to France, particularly his second stint 1921-1929. Correspondents include Ida and William McKinley, William Howard Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Herbert Hoover, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Charles E. Hughes, Frank B. Kellogg, Aristide Briand, Georges Clemenceau, Raymonde Poincare, and Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Also included are materials relating to the 1927 transatlantic flight of Lindbergh and his reception in Paris. A diary kept by Carolyn P. Herrick, wife of Myron T. Herrick, describing a 1900 trip to Europe and cruise on the Mediterranean Sea, is contained in the collection.

12	Title:	Chester Castle Bolton Papers

	Abstract:	Chester Castle Bolton (1882-1949) was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Ohio's 22nd Congressional district from 1928-1939. Bolton served previously in the Ohio State Senate from 1922-1928. During World War I, Bolton served in the Ordnance Department and the War Industries Board, and became aide to Benedict Crowell, assistant secretary of war. As a U.S. Congressman, Bolton was esteemed representative of the Great Lakes states on the Rivers and Harbors Committee, and served on the Appropriations Committee and numerous other committees. Bolton was chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee in 1934 and 1936, and helped to bring the Republican National Convention to Cleveland, Ohio in 1936. His widow, Frances Payne Bolton, succeeded him in Congress following his death in 1939. The collection consists of Army records pertaining to Bolton's service in the Ordnance Department, the War Industries Board, and attendance at the Army War College during World War I; records relating to Bolton's membership on Ohio State Senate committees (1922-1928); U.S. House of Representatives records (1928-1940), consisting of campaign files, committee files, correspondence, personal journals, material on redistricting, speeches, and service on the National Republican Congressional Committee (1932-1934); personal papers consisting of correspondence and memorials; and scrapbooks and newspaper clippings (1924-1940).
